Syllabus Description (from Canvas):

Biblical Hebrew (BH) is an important language for students of religion, ancient Middle Eastern history, and the development of Western civilization.  This course is the first in two quarters (BIBHEB 101 and 102) designed to help students with no previous knowledge of Biblical Hebrew learn the grammar and vocabulary that they need to begin reading Biblical Hebrew texts.  In the third quarter (BIBHEB 103), we read real narrative passages from the Hebrew Bible!

Learning Outcomes

  • To learn the BH alphabet
  • To be able to read BH aloud
  • To build a basic BH vocabulary
  • To learn the foundational verb paradigms of the qal stem
  • To know the shapes of nouns and some pronouns
  • To learn about the context in which BH was used and the people who used it

Textbook

  • Simon, Ethelyn; Resnikoff, Irene; Motzkin, Linda.  The First Hebrew Primer, Third Edition.  Oakland: EKS Publishing, 2005.
  • Some rather terrible scans of this book are available on our class Canvas site. Buy a hard copy if possible!
