Syllabus Description (from Canvas):

Course Description
Turkish 101 offers a dynamic introduction to modern Turkish, emphasizing meaningful learning through real-world tasks and collaborative projects. Students will master the Turkish alphabet, pronunciation patterns, essential vocabulary, and foundational grammar by engaging in authentic activities—such as planning a mock trip to Istanbul, conducting interviews with classmates, and creating cultural presentations. Through these communicative exercises and multimedia sources, learners will gain the confidence to converse about themselves, their daily lives, and their environments.

Beyond the classroom, students become part of a vibrant Turkish-language learning community: attending weekly conversation tables, partnering with native speakers, and connecting with the Turkish American community in Seattle through guest panels, cultural outings, and service-learning projects. Volunteer opportunities at events like the Seattle Turkish Film Festival and Turkfest allow students to practice language skills, deepen cultural understanding, and give back. This immersive, community-centered approach lays the groundwork for continued study and equips students with the skills, connections, and cultural insights necessary to thrive in real-world Turkish contexts.
