Syllabus Description (from Canvas):
In this course, we explore what the prophets of the Hebrew Bible said and did. We'll look at them in their ancient Middle Eastern historical, oral and literary context. Why is Ezekiel drawing on a brick? Why was Jeremiah thrown in that well? Why did Deborah go to war? No prerequisites. 3 credits.
No final exam - instead, students do a final paper of about 6 pages in length, exploring one of the minor prophets.

Catalog Description:
Explores the Biblical prophets (in translation) within their Near Eastern contexts. Historicity, literary and rhetorical sophistication, and ideological agendas. Seeks to uncover the meaning and distinctiveness of Israelite prophecy within the context of the larger Near East. No knowledge of the Bible required.
