The ancient celebration of Nowruz embodies a profound sense of continuity with our forefathers who cultivated the very land that continues to nourish and sustain us today. Perhaps this cherished transgenerational connection is why so many have celebrated Nowruz even during times of political upheaval and social crises.
Now another crisis is upon us in the form of a pandemic; our hearts are with the most vulnerable souls among us. In that light, the items that we place on our haft-sin tables, — elements of life that sprout from the dead of winter— gain another meaning. From these times of anguish and loss, may we sprout anew, determined to recenter our economy around the sanctity of human life and our interconnectedness.
The Persian and Iranian Studies Program at the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization wishes all of you a season of good health in solidarity.
We would like to share with you the University of Washington President Ana Marie Cauce's address for the Nowruz 2020 that was going to be organized by Peyvand NonProfit Organization:
"Dear friends in the Persian and Iranian communities,
Nowruz-e tun Mobarak! During this time of renewal and new beginnings, we are reminded of the remarkable things our ancestors have achieved to bring us to where we are today and of the great things we can accomplish in the year ahead and beyond.
At the University of Washington, we are deeply proud to be part of the Nowruz tradition and to play a critical role in preserving and learning from the Iranian and Persianate cultures. Your commitment to supporting the Persian & Iranian Studies program in the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilization is a beautiful example of what our community is all about. Working together, we can do amazing things.During this time of increased anxiety throughout our region, it is more important than ever that we remind ourselves of this fundamental truth.
Thank you for being a part of our community and contributing to the success of our talented faculty and students. I wish health and happiness to you and your families in the new year.
